To the entire Jones family, I'm sorry for everything you have been trying to get through. It's not fun, fair, or easy. I won't lie and say it gets easier. You just have to live around the new normal of what's been taken. I'm sorry for everything. Michele and Kass, I'm here if you want me to be...

I too was a neighbor kid growing up in Verona who spent so many good times at the Jones house. My family moved in two doors down when I was in 7th grade so I was the new kid on the block. Whether it was playing football on Sundays then watching the Giants…basketball in the driveway at the terrific basketball hoop and backboard Mr Jones put up or baseball pitching and whiffle ball games. Mike and Bill would always practice punting and kicking footballs and they were glad to have one of us to hold or snap the ball to them. Mike and Bill and their friend Bob Tierney always played with the neighbor kids, Rich, me and my brother but when they weren’t home there was all kinds of sports equipment laying around for us to use. Mr and Mrs Jones always had sodas and food for all the participants in the Jones athletic contests. Mike took us under his wing when Bob left for college and would frequently come to watch my Modified or Little League games which made me feel special to have a Varsity guy come watch me. The Jones were a wonderful family and Mike was instrumental in helping me love all sports. Mike and the Jones made my transition into Verona and the VVS community nicer for me and I will always remember and appreciate their kindness. God Bless you Mike …. Tom Dixon 5539 Main St

I found out about Mike’s passing from a forwarded post from Bill. He said that they lived in the yellow house on the hill on Main Street. I was the little boy who lived across the road in the green house.
I logged a lot of hours with Mike. I still carry some of his influences. He was the one who got me interested in football. Sports carried me through high school. I wear a Green Bay Packer lanyard at work, dress up for church in the fall with a Green Bay Packer shirt, and am a part owner of the team. I adopted the Packers and the basketball Boston Celtics from Mike. (The interest in sports was nurtured by the Jones family as they took me to the VVS football and basketball games.)
I still watch “Star Trek” (I went to the Jones’s to watch it.) and still listen to the songs of Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, a group that Mike introduced me to.
I have many memories attached to Mike: sliding down the road when we had a night of freezing rain, driving out to Schenectady with Mike and Bob Tierney to golf with Bill, listening to Mike’s predictions on school being called off for the bad weather – he was always wrong because VVS never closed, lobbying with my mother about ordering a pizza (my mother and my sisters adored Mike too.), the time Mike hit his father’s car with a snowball as Mr. Jones was driving up our hill, shooting baskets in the driveway, playing football in the side yard.
When I think of the Jones’s, I firmly believe that God put them all in our (my family’s) life. We couldn’t have grown up with any better neighbors.
It’s been a tough week. My wife and I have been praying that God would comfort the Jones family during this difficult time.

So sorry to hear of Mike's passing. He was my grade school best friend, my catcher on our little league baseball team, my center on our football years at VVS. We always had fun times at his house with friends and family. He once hit me in the head with a rock after a day of throwing rocks around. It was a long throw, and I said "damn Mike, that was a great shot"!! RIP brother.
