Gordon J. Silsby Obituary

Sherrill-Gordon "Gordie" J. Silsby of Gordon Ave. passed away Sunday morning August 17, 2025 in the Oneida Health Extended Care Facility at the age of 94.


He was born on October 26, 1930, in Carbondale, PA, the son of the late James L. and Alice (Collins) Silsby and was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School in Carbondale PA.


Gordie proudly served with the United States Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952.


February 1953, Gordie was united in marriage with E. Beverly Ryder in Trinity Episcopal Church in Carbondale, PA and shared that union until her death in November 1980. June 1983, Gordie again was united in marriage to Allie Coyne/Leach in St. Helena's Church in Sherrill and shared that union until her death in August 2009.


Gordie moved to Sherrill in 1953 and was employed by Oneida Limited until he accepted a position with the Sherrill Post Office in 1960 and remained there until his retirement in 1989. His active involvement and the accolades he earned are a testament to his dedication and contributions to the community. Gordie coached Sherrill Little League and was one of the founding members of Sherrill Pop Warner Football; was one of the founding members of the Noyes Manor Board of Directors and was appointed Emeritus of Noyes Manor. He was Past President of the Sherrill Water and Electric Board and Valley View Cemetery Board. Gordie served as past Commander of the Sherrill American Legion, Oneida County SGT-AT-ARMS. and Past President of the Oneida Lyons Club,


Gordie served on the Sherrill Commission for 16 years including several terms as commissioner, mayor and city manager. Gordie was instrumental in starting Sherrill Electric after buying Sherrill-Kenwood electric company in 1977; appointed chairman of the Sherrill Power and Light Board in 1982 until his retirement.


With great appreciation the City of Sherrill named him Grand Marshall of the City of Sherrill 100th Anniversary parade; proclaimed December 28, 2016 Gordon Silsby Day forever and October 26, 2020 was named "Gordon "Gordie" Silsby Day" to celebrate his 90th birthday.


Surviving are his children, Deborah (Clyde) Woodward of Sherrill; Margaret (Brian) McDowell of Earlville, Diane Philo of Sherrill, Brian Leach of Stockbridge; grandchildren, Melissa (Jimmy) Wulforst, Carla Graves (Mark Tubbs), Melanie (Ben) Wood, Stacy (Jim) Knight Megan McDowell, William (Jessica) Terrell III, Brian and Michael Leach; great-grandchildren, Seth Schaefer, Kaleb and Konnor Erdige, Ryan and Reese Wood and Brianna Dickan; two nieces Diana Caban and Barbara Poe and family of the heart Ward and Patrica Jones and Megan and Dick Guare.


Gordie was predeceased by one daughter, Ann (Leach) Terrell, granddaughter, Amanda L. Terrell, two sisters Audrey Schreck and Elizabeth Hale and angel babies.


Family and friends are invited to call on Friday August 22, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 464 Sherrill Rd., Sherrill, NY. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Gethsemane Episcopal Church, 320 Park Street, Sherrill NY with Rev. Georgina Hegney presiding. The family invites friends to a celebration of Gordie's Life at The Sherrill American Legion Post 230, E. Seneca Street, Sherrill following the funeral service. Burial will be at a later date in Valley View Cemetery, Oneida, NY.
