Karen was a Registered Professional Nurse supervisor at a Nursing home I worked at with her for 5 years . Karen was so kind to the residents and loving to all her co workers . My son would see Karen walking and swimming at the YMCA as he grew up and we are both saddened to hear of her passing . She was an inspiration in her profession and as a woman .
She would share her pictures of her loving dogs with us .
Thank you Karen for all you did for us

I came to know Aunt Karen through her marriage to my Uncle Charles, so I find it appropriate to not only focus on the light and celebration that Karen's life brought to the world, but also what an inspiration their bond of love truly is, and shall remain.
Aunt Karen had a depth and breadth of soul that not many may know how to cultivate or appreciate when they see it- as it takes a very uniquely special individual who shows up to love selflessly, despite deeply hidden pain.
I admire Aunt Karen for fighting multiple internal battles daily and still having the capacity and limitless reserves to genuinely take interest, care and show love to others, from family to strangers.
True joy and love could be seen in the wedding photo of Aunt Karen and Uncle Charles. I remember when my Mom, Uncle Charles' sister, told me he had gotten married and how I was looking forward to meeting her. We are a small family and it was exciting to have a new Aunt.
I finally got to meet Aunt Karen when I came to visit after coming back from being overseas for a long time. She was so curious and wanted to know everything. Sometimes she would ask questions that really made me reflect, and it was clear she wanted to get to know me more than at a surface level. She genuinely wanted to have the conversations that others may shy away from, and more often than not, it was so that she could further relate, or express care or concern, or genuine curiosity. Aunt Karen also had a way of looking at the person with whom she was speaking, partly studying, partly wanting to know more, and fully eager to listen, so engaged. She had an almost child-like sense of wonder and she could discuss many things while bringing a mix of humor and insight.
When I came to visit, Aunt Karen and Uncle Charles were extremely generous and kind. They helped me to get things I needed but did not have, like a sturdy pair of hiking boots. Aunt Karen was so careful and kind in helping me look- and they were both so patient that it has always stuck with me. This was was a tough time in my life and Aunt Karen and Uncle Charles gave me a peaceful place to stay, while extending warmth and compassion, encouragement and a non-judgemental ear. Aunt Karen shared perspectives with me and taught me much about acceptance. Uncle Charles showed me what it was to have commitment to marriage and one's faith.
The greatest life lesson Aunt Karen taught me, one I think she taught many others through her care and career as a nurse and through her marriage with Uncle Charles, was that true love does not judge. Aunt Karen and Uncle Charles loved one another through circumstances in which the lesser amongst us simply could not handle, nor manage, nor even attempt. Through it all, they did not take one another or their love for granted.
When I think on tributes and legacies and what a person leaves behind when they go, I am blessed, honored, and thankful to have known Aunt Karen and to have been a witness to know that such a pure love does exist. It is her love that will live on; the way she loved animals, her love for her dogs/kiddos, the ways she wanted to express her love, the love in her smile even with people she had never met before, and ultimately, the love between her and Uncle Charles.
When I had my son, Aunt Karen and Uncle Charles picked out a beautiful Precious Moments Cross with a little boy in prayer on it, and it was an ornament which I hung from his crib. For his birthday, they would send a card and a gift for him. Even when I didn't call or write to say Thank You, they never let that come in the way of expressing their love and care.
Their love inspired them to give selflessly.
May that example set by Aunt Karen live on in those who knew and loved her.
I pray for the comfort, peace and restoration of Aunt Karen's soul as she ascends to be with Our Creator, and for the joy of that love between Aunt Karen and Uncle Charles to live on and brighten any dark days ahead.

Karen was a wonderful sister-in-law for 21 years.
Karen was a support to all who knew her. She loved animals and wanted to someday operate a Labrador Retriever Rescue. Her time on earth was cut short due to her health which limited that dream. I remember visiting Karen and Charles when their beloved Lab, Heidi, had puppies. Karen was so fond of each puppy, and I was promised a pup named Hans. Although I wasn't able to adopt Hans, Karen and Charles provided Hans with a wonderful home and exceptional care in his last months of life.
Karen was a dedicated nursing professional who cared deeply for all residents in her care. She believed in "Quality of Life" for the residents she served dutifully. She was an inspiration to elderly and ill residents who were very fond of her loving presence as well as her exceptional nursing skills. She often went above and beyond the call of duty in the care of residents.
Karen and Charles presented me with many gifts over the years. One year they sent me a Scottie topiary which was very special. I have many lasting treasures of Karen's kindness. She was truly the kindest person I have ever known, and I will remember her expression "God Bless" whenever she thought it appropriate to say.
Karen was a faithful Catholic who lived the values of her faith. She always put others first, and she lived The Golden Rule.
She never knew a stranger and could initiate a conversation with anyone. She made many life long friends because she was the image of a true friend.
My father lived with Karen and Charles in his last years of life. There he found the happiness of security and kindness, and he was very fond of Karen.
On October 3, 2021, the world lost a wonderful woman, a great nurse, a loving wife and and an exceptional human being. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Dear Charles, I always looked forward to seeing Karen, you and your babies at Green Lakes. Karen's sunny disposition and positive outlook made my day so much happier. Green Lakes will seem a bit less sunny, but I know Karen's spirit will be on the trails and parking lots. Thank you for sharing her with all of us in the Green Lakes community.
With much sadness and love, Betsy Pfohl
