Obituary of Elizabeth V. Thorpe

Sherrill-Elizabeth V. Thorpe, age 102, a lifelong resident passed away peacefully on Thursday evening January 13, 2022 in the Oneida Healthcare after a short illness.

Betty was born on December 10, 1919 in Oneida, New York a daughter of the late Winn and Josephine (Felts) Merrell and graduated from Oneida High School in 1936.

Betty had a long working career with Oneida Limited Silversmith Military Sales Department and retired in 1985.

She loved her family and was dearly loved in return. Her life was rooted in her deep Catholic Faith and attended daily mass well into her eighties. She was active in her parish and was a member of St. Helena's Altar Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America.

She loved spending time with her family and traveling. In her retirement Betty found great enjoyment in playing golf.

Surviving are her four children and their spouses, Patricia Spong, Judith (Gordon) Zophy, John M. (Sheila) Thorpe and Mary Jane Thorpe, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Betty was predeceased by a son-in-law Greg Spong and brother Robert W. Merrell.

 A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 10;30 a.m. at St. Helena's Church, 210 Primo Ave., Sherrill, NY. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Oneida, NY. Arrangements are with the Malecki Funeral Home of Sherrill. Online condolences may be sent to maleckifuneralhome.com
