Obituary of Marie J. Bates

Verona-Marie J. Bates, age 93, a longtime area resident passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon July 7, 2022. She was born on June 20, 1929 in Canastota, New York a daughter of the late Harry and Margaret (Schremp) Simmons and was a graduate of the Canastota Schools. On May 20, 1967 Marie and Rev. Roger Bates were united in marriage in Canastota, New York and shared that sacred vow of over forty-three years together until Roger's death on August 21, 2010. Prior to her retirement in 1986 Marie was employed as a secretary with the Griffiss Air Force Base of Rome. Marie was a member of the South Bay Chapel where she formed many longtime friendships with other parishioners. In her spare time she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Surviving are her sister, Doris Cole of Sherrill, one brother Bernard (Nancy) Simmons of Canastota, one step-son Charles Bates of Vernon, one step daughter Viola May Ducatte of Clockville, one sisters-in-law Rita Simmons of Whitelaw, two nieces, Carleen and Joanne, two nephews, Douglas and Robert and several great-nieces and great-nephews.. Marie was predeceased by three brothers, Donald Simmons during WW II, Harry Simmons Jr., Carl Simmons, one sister Beverley Hyland and two sisters-in-law Eleanor Simmons and Sharon Simmons. In keeping with Marie's wishes there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Thursday July 14, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Verona Cemetery E. Main Street, Verona, NY.
