Obituary of Thomas L. Gerken

Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Thomas Gerken, 86, of Vernon Center, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2024. A devoted father, grandfather, and patriot, Tom lived a life full of adventure, dedication, and passion.

Born into a farming family, Tom's early years were shaped by the values of hard work and community. His fascination with aviation led him to a distinguished career as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. Over his 28 years of service, Tom flew numerous missions and spoke often of the amazing people with whom he served. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and he carried the values of honor, courage, and resilience throughout his life.

Tom married Carole, his college sweetheart, and together they built a beautiful family. Carole, who passed away nearly three years ago, was the reason he got to return to his farm roots, as she found their forever home, a 33-acre farm, in Vernon Center. They raised three children: Scott, Heidi, and Dean, and numerous collies.

After retiring from the Air Force, Tom channeled his passion into collecting antique John Deere tractors. His collection became a source of pride and joy, reflecting his appreciation for history and craftsmanship. Tom was an active member of two antique tractor clubs, where he found camaraderie and shared his knowledge with fellow enthusiasts. His tractors were more than just machines; they were a testament to his meticulous nature and love for preserving the past

. One of Tom's greatest joys was "Sibs Weekend," an annual gathering where he and his brothers, sisters, and their spouses would come together for a long weekend of fun, laughter, and learning adventures. These weekends were filled with cherished memories, deepening the bonds of family and creating stories that would be shared for generations.

Tom's legacy is carried on by his children: Scott Gerken of Lebanon, IN; Heidi Gerken (Mike Boyle) of Reston, VA; and Dean Gerken of Durhamville, NY. While not having any grandchildren of their own, "Aunt and Uncle Gerken" considered Owen and Nora Rouse as their grandchildren and cherished their time together.

Calling hours will be 4 to 6pm June 28, 2024 followed by a celebration of Tom's life at the Malecki Funeral Home, 23 Front Street, Vernon NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wounded Warriors or The Vernon Center Fire Department.

Tom Gerken will be remembered as a loving father, a devoted husband, a proud veteran, and a man who lived life with passion and purpose. His memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him. Rest in peace, Tom.
